It s fairly easy to assume something is biased. But what criteria are used to actually determine bias? Locate or focus on one single news information piece that you think is biased ? a newspaper piece, a televised newscast, an online news article or documentary. Write up an analysis (in short essay format) that addresses the following questions in the two levels of deconstruction regarding your biased item. It must be a different news piece that any of those you included in previous writing assignments. Be sure to include a proper works cited section in ASA format. Level 1: Framing What is the context of your story? Why is your story being discussed, reported, shared, etc. in the first place? What made you determine the biased nature of your story? What makes you think it s biased? Do you think others would agree? Why or why not? Is your story favoring or opposing your personal views? Did this have anything to do with why you picked the story that you did? Level 2: Analysis Does your story providelist a set of sources or references? Are any citations given for key points or facts? If so, how were the sourcesreferences included? What kind of sources are they? If not, why do you think the sourcesreferences were not included? If statistics, polls, surveys, numbers, etc. are mentioned, are important research components mentioned such as sampling strategiesdemographics, possible margins of error, an author s conflict of interest, or anything else you think would be important to address? Do your answers to the previous two questions affect your view on your story s credibility? Why or why not? Do you think the inclusion of sources matters to you? Do you think matters to most people? If sources or other important information are not, are you able to locate them if you wanted to?
