*This assignment should be done in size 8 font* Sentence diagramming logically links author’s thoughts to each other in an unbroken chain of thought, and clearly maps out for us progression of author’s argument in each text. Sentence diagramming must, however, follow Greek text rather than various English translations (that rephrase/paraphrase Greek texts in their renditions) for accurate work. Following Greek text helps us to not mix-up each sentence’s subject-verb-direct object, and trailing clauses attached to each of these three parts of speech (which form a sentence). Subject-verb-direct object of each sentence in a text (each of which I demarcate with a red stroke “/”) rightly set will provide author’s thoughts as he builds his points within each given paragraph of each bible passage. Again, we need to use our Greek text (as found in our Interlinear Greek Text) in conjunction with KJV to achieve accurate diagramming work.KJV tends to retain Greek order of word and translation best. Selected Text: John 15:1-11 *The first 6 verses have already been completed for you. Follow the directions and examples below to complete the assignment. What Needs To Be Done: 1.To start your diagramming, you need to open a new Word doc. page on your computer. 2.Start reading your chosen bible text, and identify first sentence in the text (subject-verb-direct object, each with their trailing clauses as seen in the text) and place it on extreme left side of your word doc. page. 3.Next you will ascertain second sentence in your passage in same manner identifying its subject, verb, and direct object (again each with their trailing clauses as seen in the text). 4.After identifying second sentence, next and most critical thing you must do is to determine in your mind if the idea being conveyed in the second sentence is completing author’s previous sentence (which you just placed on extreme left side of word doc. page) extending/supporting/building it up, or if that second sentence is presenting a new point (not a new subject!!) entirely. 5.If the sentence is extending first sentence’s thought, you will hit a tab on second line of the word doc. pg and place the extension-statement on that line (after a tab). If the sentence is presenting a new point you will place the new sentence on a new extreme left (without tab) just like the first one. 6.You will follow same method diagramming/phrasing all of your given passage. 7.If two or more sentences are connected with conjunctions (e.g., but, for, because, and, etc.,) you will place the conjunction in middle of two connecting sentences as seen below. 8.You need to attempt to supply a three point preaching outline for your text! Here are samples of sentence diagramming that could help guide you composing your own diagramming. ***Again, one needs to follow Greek Interlinear translation (or KJV only) so as not to miss subject-nouns/verb/direct object clauses needed for perfect diagramming. Example: John 15:1-6 “I am/ (is ??)/ the true vine, and My Father/is/ the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit,/ He/ takes away/ and Every branch that bears fruit,/He/ prunes/ that it may bear more fruit. You/ are/ already clean/ because of the word which I have spoken to you. (Ye)/ Abide/ in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot /bear/ fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. “I am/ (is??)/ the vine, you/ are/ the branches. He who/ abides/ in Me and I in him bears much fruit; for Without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not/ abide/ in Me, he is cast out as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. ***After you have completed the diagram, you will then submit three sermon points that woul best explain the text you’ve diagrammed. Possible 3-Sermon Outline/Teaching Points from John 15:1-11 Forming Outline Points: – Need to think through your diagrammed text and objectively summarize, group-up, class-together biblical author’s points (of the passage) into about three main ideas for your preaching/teaching work. Presenting correct contextual points seen in the passage you are working on will validate your understanding and mastery of biblical author’s point from context of his argument. – To successfully group-up Bible author’s points from context of his argument, you need to stay on the diagrammed passage. Do not start to add verses from other Bible passages to your diagrammed passage. This is because each verse outside the diagrammed text you now wish to add does has its own context which is very different from context of your diagrammed passage. – Your three outline points must be progressive, must be consecutive, and must be uninterrupted following author’s flow of thought. – Each of the three outline points needs to be stated in brief and concise manner. – Each outline point need to capture main points of verses its covering. Alliteration could help to make your sermon points easy digest/easy to remember by your audience.
