There have been 14 Dalai Lamas the latest is the fourteenth known as Tenzin Gyatso. He was born in Taktser village, in eastern Tibet on July, 1935. When the 13th Dalai Lama passed on, search parties were sent in search for a successor and Tenzin Gyatso came to be the one. As a Buddhist monk he underwent a thorough education of eighteen years of study after which he graduated with the equivalent of PhD in Buddhist metaphysics. When china invaded Tibet in 1950 he had to take full political power despite his tender age. Being that China was strong their only option was to negotiate. As this did not bare much fruit he was force to flee across the Himalayas in 1959. In exile he established a democratic government dedicated to work for the freedom of Tibet and welfare of the Tibetan refugees. He managed to set up schools having English, Hindi and western style education alongside Tibetan language and culture. He traveled world wide advocating for ecumenical understanding, respect for environment, kindness and compassion and also the world peace.
