Solution Proposal

I have already chosen my criminal and social justice issue. It is castration on sex offenders. I started a mini outline that you can add too. that I am attaching. My social and criminal justice issue that I have chosen is castration on sex offenders. Society has been plagued long enough and it is time to put a stop to sexual attacks. The only way to stop and prevent sexual offenses from occurring would be to have a punishment that fits its crime. Offenses that meet the criteria for castration would include sexual contact with a child older than 12, sodomy, incest, prostitution and raping of a child under 12, serial rapist, bestiality, and female genital mutilation. The resolution would be that sex offenders that meet the criteria would be castrated. Reference: Sex Offenders. Sexually Violent Predators. Punishment, Residence Restrictions and Monitoring. II. How often sexual assaults occur in America A. Every two minutes an American is sexually assaulted. Within one year 61,000 children are victims of substained or indicated sexual abuse. More than 284,000 Americans that are 12 and older are sexually assaulted or raped within one year. (Department of Justice). III. Punishments for sexual attack. A. In California a sexual assault conviction carries with it a possible sentence of 24, 36, or 48 months in prison. The exact time of sentencing depends on the facts of the case, including aggravating and mitigating factors. If the offender does not have a criminal background they may even get a reduced sentence. IV. How often convicted sex offenders reoffend A. Recidivism rates vary among different types of sex offenders. For example, rapists tend to have higher recidivism rates than child molesters, while incest offenders tend to have the lowest recidivism rates. Sex offenders with a criminal history have higher recidivism rates than sex offenders convicted for the first time. Some sex offenders, such as child molesters, may reoffend many years after an initial sex offense. For these sex offenders, deviant sexual behavior may be a life-long problem(Song & Lieb, 1994). V. Lifelong effects on victims of being sexually assaulted A. There are many short- and long-term effects of sexual assault and rape that affect the mind, body and spirit. Many victims suffer from depression. The physical, mental and spiritual effects following sexual assault and rape are difficult to cope with.
